WHAT IS LIVE SCAN

WHAT IS THE BACKGROUND CHECK ALL ABOUT

Live Scan Fingerprint Background Check

What is Live Scan?

Livescan (or LiveScan) refers to the machine as well as the process of fingerprinting by which the fingerprints are captured and transmitted electronically using a live scan (LiveScan) machine.

LiveScan can facilitate the electronic submission of fingerprints and the subsequent automated background checks.

It is an inkless fingerprinting process. The fingerprints captured by the LiveScan machine are digitally transmitted to the servers at the DOJ (Department of Justice) in a few seconds, thus avoiding the weeks of day otherwise caused by sending the hard copy fingerprint cards through regular mail.

The fingerprints once received at DOG servers, are compared against known criminal history records to complete the background investigation.

Live Scan devices allow the electronic submission of applicant fingerprint images and related information to the Department of Justice (DOJ). Live Scan technology replaces the process of recording an individual's fingerprint pattern manually through a rolling process using ink and a hard fingerprint card. Fingerprint images are digitized through an electronic process enabling the electronic transfer of the fingerprint image data, in combination with personal descriptor information, to central computers at the DOJ. This electronic transfer of information drastically reduces submission time frames. Previously, days were needed to send hard fingerprint cards via the United States Postal Service.

Why is it necessary to get a Live Scan?

Several other professions, including Nurses, Dentists, Massage Therapists, Pharmacy Techs, and others, may be required to submit their fingerprints using Live Scan as part of their background check procedure.

What is the process of a Live Scan?

The sequence of live scan fingerprinting process is as follows.

The “Request Live Scan Services Form” will typically be provided by the agency requiring your background check.
You can take this form to a live scan location  o have your fingerprints taken.

The Live Scan system's operators will take your fingerprints and electronically upload them to the Department of Justice and the FBI for processing. Only the asking agency will receive the results.

Only a certified fingerprint roller or competent law enforcement officials can capture a Live Scan in the state of California.

How long will it take to complete the live scan fingerprint verification process?

In most circumstances, the fingerprint check results will be available within 72 hours (2 to 3 days). Results may be delayed in some circumstances owing to a variety of factors.

The DOJ will notify the seeking agency if there is a significant delay. The results are sent to the requesting agency stated on the Request for Live Scan Service form through email or mail.

What can I do if fingerprints are rejected?

Many factors can cause the LiveScan fingerprint procedure to reject a fingerprint. One common cause for rejection is that the applicant's fingerprints contain traits that make the live scan process difficult to capture.

Cuts, scars, and calluses on the fingers are examples of these traits. Often, a thorough rescanning will remedy the problem. The majority of reputable this issue does not come up often however, we will not charge you an additional fee for this rescanning.
